Teuvo Salminen (Finland)

Teuvo Salminen was born in Rauma in 1946. His artistic talent was discovered in his childhood in school art contests, in which he frequently participated. He drew his first caricatures at fourteen with his teachers as subjects.

His artistic career began at the age of seventeen when he won the Nordic Junior Art Contest and had his first private exhibition in his home town Rauma in 1964.

His career as a graphic artist took off when some of his works appeared in the annual exhibitions of the Finnish Artist Society and the Finnish Graphic Artists Society.

Teuvo Salminen graduated as a teacher in 1969 and immediately continued his studies at the university specialising as a teacher of visual arts.

Besides teaching he began to design gold and silver jewellery at first for the Viikinniemi jewellery factory and later for Kultakeskus. This new area of creativity inspired him and provided so much work, that he gave up teaching and started working as a freelancer. His jewellery collections were sold in Sweden, Norway, Estonia and Germany as well as in Finland. Drawing caricatures and graphic design remained secondary occupations.

This situation changed in 1998 when Salminen started drawing the editorial caricatures in Helsingin Sanomat, the largest newspaper in the Nordic Countries. Due to this work he has gained a recognized position as one of the best caricature artists in Finland.

For some years now Teuvo Salminen has specialized in drawing caricatures and it is currently his main occupation but he also maintains an interest in many other sectors of art

In 2000 he started an advertising agency in addition to his gallery. A-LOGO specializes in business graphics and graphic design. In addition to this he also illustrates books, publishes landscape calendars with his own photographs and paints in oils and watercolours.

Besides the visual arts Teuvo Salminen also loves music. He started to play the trumpet at the age of nine and has maintained the interest playing in many orchestras and giving solo performances over five decades.

Teuvo Salminen is especially fond of jazz. He has been the founder and conductor of several big bands. He currently plays in the Lahti Big Band and also in two wind bands in Rauma.
